With almost 80 primary school age Ukranaian refugees now living in the Breaffy House Resort, outside Castlebar, since they fled Ukraine with their families in March, these students aged between 4 and 13 are now attending schools in Breaffy - Castlebar, Balla, Belcarra and Kinaffe National School outside Swinford.

Kinaffe NS is a rural school, located along the Kiltimagh to Swinford road and had 6 students and a Principal and a teacher at the start of this academic year, but now the school enrolment has more than trebled with 15 Ukranian students being transported out by bus from Castlebar daily and the school enrolment now stands at 21.

Margaret Reilly is the Prinicipal of Kinaffe National School and the story of the school and community’s response to the Ukranian children is covered in Today’s Irish Times.

Margaret was with her students on the playing field at the Swinford Secondary School pitch today when Midwest News Editor Teresa O'Malley caught up with her  and congratulated her and the local community for the enthusiastic welcome they have extended to children who have had to flee their homes, because of the invasion by Russia of Ukraine.
