The Government's affordable homes scheme is under fire today after it emerged that people earning up to 100 thousand euro a year are eligible to apply.

Interest free subsidies are awarded under the Affordable Housing Fund which sees local authorities providing an equity stake to make the homes more affordable.

The councils are also providing the land and serviced sites to developers so the housing can be built.

However the Irish Independent reports that those earning up to 100 thousand euro a year can qualify, if they've received two letters of refusal from mortgage providers.

Sinn Fein's Housing spokesperson Eoin O'Broin is quoted as saying it makes a 'mockery' of the word affordable.
