First-time buyers in Mayo will be disappointed to hear that there are no plans currently for affordable housing schemes in the county.

Affordable homes are aimed at helping first-time buyers who are struggling to obtain mortgages, but do not qualify for social housing.

Mayo Fine Gael Deputy Alan Dillon has expressed his disappointment that Mayo County Council has been excluded from the national affordable housing 5-year delivery targets, despite problems that exist particularly in towns such as Westport, Castlebar and Ballina.

Deputy Dillon raised the matter with the Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien last week, and told Midwest News this lunchtime that the Government needs to assist people in the squeezed-middle who want to buy their own homes....
