The Papal Nuncio to Ireland is ending his six-year term of office and is being transferred to Prague.

The announcement was confirmed today by the Vatican, as Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo was in Galway Cathedral for the installation of the new Bishop of Galway Michael Duignan.

Pope Francis has confirmed that Archbishop Okolo will take up the role of Apostolic Nuncio to the Czech Republic.

Retiring Bishop of Galway Brendan Kelly paid tribute to him at this afternoon's Mass in Galway Cathedral, and thanked him for his service in Ireland since 2017.

Bishop Michael Duignan was installed as the new Bishop of Galway at this afternoon's Mass, and also remains Bishop of Clonfert, as the two dioceses will now be pastorally administered by the one Bishop.

Bishop Duignan says this is a historic development - not just for the Church communities in parts of counties Galway, Clare, Mayo, Roscommon and Offaly that comprise the two dioceses, but also for the Catholic Church on the island of Ireland.
