Westport and the Clew Bay area have been officially certified as Ireland's first Cycle Friendly Destination under the European Cycling Federation (ECF).
The designation means that businesses including restaurants, guest houses, hotels, cafes and pubs will provide facilities for cyclists and their gear.
In addition, many employers in the area will provide cycling facilities for staff who opt to cycle to work.
Westport Councillor Peter Flynn says it’s a proud day for the town and region, and will be of benefit to the entire county.
A number of local groups working together including Destination Westport, the Chamber of Commerce, Westport Municipal District and local businesses have secured the designation
Cllr Flynn is now encouraging everyone in the hospitality industry across the county to sign up so they can be 'on the map' for cycling tourism.
He has been telling Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley how it feels to have secured the designation..
