The statutory in-patient charge for children in public hospitals is set to be scrapped.

The Cabinet approved the move today, and work will get underway to draft laws to give effect to the measure.

The planned bill will remove the existing charge of 80 euro per night for all children under 16.

Mayo Fianna Fail Senator Lisa Chambers has welcomed the move, and says it will ease the financial pressure on parents when bringing their child to hospital for in-patient care.

Senator Chambers says this proposal is another step towards delivering universal healthcare in Ireland, and she hopes these charges will be abolished by the Summer.
