The Green Party leader, Minister Eamon Ryan, is meeting with Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil TDs and Senators this evening to discuss the proposed ban on cutting turf, while Sinn Féin has called for the ban to be scrapped.

The issue has proven very controversial - particularly in rural Ireland, with many rural TDs opposed to plans to ban the sale of turf from the 1st September, while the Green Party says a balance needs to be struck between tackling the problem of air pollution, while respecting the traditional reliance on turf in some rural areas.

Mayo FG TD Michael Ring says now is not the time to try and ban the selling of turf - given the war in Ukraine and rising fuel prices.

Deputy Ring told Midwest News that Minister Eamon Ryan's plan is daft, and he will be telling the Minister so in their meeting this evening...
