The duration of welfare payments for families whose children are hospitalised with serious illnesses are to be doubled.

The Domiciliary care allowance the Carer's allowance will now be paid to the parents or guardians of children under 16 who are hospitalised for up to 6 months, for 26 weeks instead of the previous 13 weeks.

Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys says she hopes it will give families 'greater financial security and peace of mind.'
