A candlelight vigil will be held in Athenry tonight to remember the young camogie player who died yesterday after sustaining a head injury at a match on Monday last.

20-year old Kate Moran from Monivea died following the injury sustained in an accidental  collision during a club match between Athenry and Ardrahan.

The death of the young player has stunned the region and the sporting community nationally.

Kate was a member of Athenry Camogie Club and she represented Galway Camogie at an underage level, winning two Under 16 All-Ireland titles.

In an online post, Galway Camogie Board said Kate was a “role model and leader both on and off the field” and has expressed heartfelt and deepest condolences to her family, friends and clubmates.

She is survived by her parents Cathal and Mary Moran, brother Thady and sisters Leah and Saoirse.

Kate's remains will repose at her home in Monivea tomorrow (Thursday ) evening from 4 to 8pm.

Funeral Mass on Friday at 1 o'clock in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Ryehill, Monivea with burial afterwards in Templemoyle Cemetery, Newcastle, Athenry.
