A fire on the Ox Mountains, outside Foxford, last night caused anxiety and worry for a number of residents in the immediate area. The blaze threatened a number of homes and buildings, according to the Mayo Fire Service.

A gorse fire that had been smouldering for a number of days, spread across both sides of the mountain and lit the skies last night. The blaze could be seen over a wide area in the darkness.

The Mayo Fire service is now monitoring the situation. It fought the blaze into the early hours of this morning and was assisted by brigades from Ballina, Swinford, Crossmolina and Enniscrone

Local Councillor Neil Cruise has praised the residents of Churchpark, Corlee, Larganmore and Glanduff who along with units of Mayo County Council’s Fire service ensured there was no loss of life or property due to last night’s gorse fires.
