An inquest has opened in Swinford today into the death of a 79-year old man from north Mayo who died of Covid-19 at Mayo University Hospital almost two years ago.
John Carolan from Ballymunnely, Bellacorrick was admitted to the hospital's Emergency Department on 18th March 2020 with symptoms consistent with a stroke, and died almost 2 weeks later on the 1st April .
Today's inquest is being conducted by the Coroner for Mayo Pat O'Connor, who explained that in this case, the cause of death has been established.
Mr Carolan died of Covid-19, but the Coroner said there are questions to be raised into the policy and procedures in place in the hospital at the time for Covid, non-Covid and suspected Covid patients.
