The value of the Linenhall Theatre to Castlebar and the county, both on a cultural and economic level was outlined to members of Castlebar Municipal District, earlier this week, when the interim Director of the facility, Fiona Neary addressed the monthly meeting of the authority.
The Linenhall is Mayo's oldest Arts Centre and it has an annual footfall of 25,000 people, with a programme of events that includes live music, theatre, cinema, opera, dance, visual arts and workshops.
In the aftermath of the Covid restrictons, the schedule for events this year is filling up quickly, with an outdoor music event on Friday week, Feb 4th planned to mark the extensive restoration work on the building.
Fiona was seeking annual capital funding for the Linenhall from Castlebar District coucillors again this year, she says the funding secured in this way can be used to secure additional grant funding from other sources and it is all vital funding for the theatre and the local economy.
