The Co Sligo community of Skreen and Dromard are outraged that an elderly man was attacked earlier this week during a robbery at his property.

That's according to Independent Councillor Michael Clarke.

On Tuesday evening at about 7pm, a number of men forced their way into a property on the N59 in Skreen, and assaulted a man in his 70's.

The victim was taken to Sligo University Hospital where he's being treated for his injuries.

A sum of cash was taken in the incident, and Gardai are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to come forward.

Local Councillor Michael Clarke says tougher prison sentences need to be introduced to deter people from taking part in such criminal activity.

He told Midwest News that the local community is angered at this latest incident....
