7,500 thousand homes damaged by pyrite or mica are set to be repaired or rebuilt under a new redress scheme approved by Cabinet yesterday.
The 100 per cent redress scheme is capped at 420 thousand euro and will include expenses for renting alternative accommodation and storage costs, while homes are being repaired or rebuilt.
This proposal has been cautiously welcomed by families affected, however, they claim the new scheme will not actually provide 100% compensation - due to the amount being offered per square foot.
Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien has confirmed that the cost of a rebuild will be calculated based on 145 euro per square foot for the first 1,000 square feet, while the rate per square foot after that drops to €110.
