CCTV along the Greenway in Westport wasn’t working on Saturday evening last when a young man was assaulted and robbed, according to Westport councillor Christy Hyland.

The councillor told yesterday’s Budget meeting of Mayo County Council that the camera was out of action because the local authority did not have the funds to repair it.

A man in his 20s was attacked by a group of people in the vicinity of St Colmcille’s National School at the Quays in Westport, at around 8pm, on Saturday evening last. He was assaulted and had money taken from him.

Cllr Hyland said while the CCTV system in Westport town is functioning, a separate camera system set up close to the MUGA pitch along the Greenway is out of action. He said he was told a number of months ago by Mayo County Council that there were “no available funds” to repair the cameras.
