The number of patients in hospital with Covid-19 has risen to 400 today, according to the latest figures. It is the highest number since 8 March.

74 of these patients are in intensive care.

HSE CEO Paul Reid says the number of people in intensive care units with Covid-19 has risen by 20% in one week, as he urged people to continue to come forward and be vaccinated.

In this region, the number of Covid patients being treated at Galway University Hospital has increased to 21 - that's up from 12 this day last week.

There are 16 patients with the virus being treated at Sligo University Hospital today - three times the number this day last week, while the number of Covid patients  at Mayo University Hospital has fallen to 2 .

Yesterday, the Department of Health reported 1,384 new cases of the virus.

Daily case numbers have spiked in the past few days, following a steady decline.
