Today is Tyre Safety Day, and the Road Safety Authority, Gardai and the Irish Tyre Industry Association have teamed up to remind all road users to check their tyres to ensure they're roadworthy.
It's estimated that defective tyres are contributory factor in as many as one in ten fatal crashes annually, resulting in approximately 14 deaths each year.
Motorists are being urged to "get a grip" when it come to tyre safety, by conducting a regular walk-around the car and checking the tyres for tread depth, cracks or bulges.
Tyres showing signs of deterioration should be replaced immediately. The Irish Tyre Industry Association says its members are offering free tyre checks this week, so drivers shouldn't wait until their NCT comes around to check the roadworthiness of their tyres.
Gardai will be conducting roadside checks today, checking tyres in conjunction with Road Safety Authorty Vehicle Inspectors, and those found driving a vehicle with defective tyres could be facing 4 penalty points and a fine.
