The Government must put more investment into University Hospital Galway to tackle waiting times for children in need of MRI scans.

That’s according to Independent Galway East TD Sean Canney, who received confirmation that children are waiting up to 24 months for an MRI scan.

There are two categories of waiting times for children on MRI scans, namely General Anaesthetic (GA) and Non-General Anaesthetic (NGA).

There are 39 children classed as urgent, waiting 10 months for an MRI and 23 children on the Non-GA, with 146 children awaiting MRI scans in total.

UHG are currently replacing their MRI scanner and have a managed service dealing with inpatient lists and a limited number of outpatients.

Deputy Canney told Midwest News he thinks it’s terrible that children classed as urgent are subjected to long waiting times.
