€586,000 in additional funding has been provided for “The Atlantic Story” in Aughleam by Údarás na Gaeltachta.
This was confirmed by Mayo Fine Gael TD Michael Ring - a former Minister for Rural and Community Development.
Previously, €2.4 million was allocated from his department to this project, along with €827,000 in total from Údarás na Gaeltachta and half a million euro from Roinn na Gaeltachta.
Deputy Ring says the idea of this project is to develop a major tourism hub in Aughleam in the North Mayo Gaeltacht, which he says will attract huge numbers of domestic and international visitors. This hub will be for visitors to learn about the cultural and natural heritage attractions in the area.
Tours of Blacksod Lighthouse were run on a trial basis during late July/August and proved hugely successful, with 2,000 people availing of the experience.
Deputy Ring told Midwest News that the new tourism hub will have a positive impact for businesses in the wider Erris region....
