A new charity called "Friends of Mayo University Hospital" has been launched.
The charity has been set up by a voluntary group to fundraise, to enhance and improve the overall hospital experience for patients and their families at the Castlebar hospital.
The group will co-ordinate and organise community fundraising events, and then target the funds to the areas in the hospital which are most in need.
The hospital's general manager Catherine Donohoe has welcomed the launch of Friends of Mayo University Hospital, and says it will strengthen the bonds between the community and the hospital, with a joint purpose of delivering high-quality, patient centred safe care.
The manager pointed to the generosity of the people of Mayo towards the hospital in the past - which included purchasing an MRI scanner, CT scanner and developing the Cystic Fibrosis building.
