Roughly 370,000 households are set to begin receiving this year's fuel allowance payments from this week.
Around 292 million euro's to be paid out through the means-tested payment for the next 28 weeks.
Recipients will receive either the weekly rate of 28 euro or two lump payments of 392 euro each.
Almost 14,000 households in Mayo received the payment through the National Fuel Scheme last winter.
Fine Gael Deputy Alan Dillon told Midwest News that it plays a vital role in giving families across the region security to pay their heating bills.
He added that it will be especially important to people this year in the context of rising fuel costs globally, and he will encourage Government colleagues to factor this into the upcoming budget.
