Ireland's President Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to the Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces -Castlebar native Mark Mellett - who's retiring this month after a long and distinguished career.

At a ceremony in Áras an Uachtaráin yesterday, the President said Vice-Admiral Mellett leaves a legacy of public service for which we can be deeply grateful, and he will be greatly missed by all those privileged to have worked with him.

Mark Mellett joined the Irish Navy in 1976 and worked his way up the ranks.

When he took over as Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces in 2015, he made military history by becoming the first Chief of Staff to be selected from outside the army.
