31 locations across the region have been prioritised for river habitat enhancement works.
This was confirmed by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), with 18 rivers in Lough Corrib, 10 in Lough Mask and three rivers in the Lough Carra catchment area selected.
Each river channel has been prioritised for enhancement works based on its hydromorphological condition, which considers how far the state of the river had gone from its natural condition.
It is proposed that the enhancement works will be completed over a five-year period, with some already underway at a number of top priority habitat sites.
Pat Gorman, the Director of the Western River Basin District told Midwest News that they are trying to restore these rivers to their natural state.
