Eirgrid have described the selection of a route option for the North Connacht 110KV power line as a milestone for the project.
The underground route, which is around 60km in length, will bypass major towns and villages including Ballina, Foxford and Ballaghadereen.
Eirgrid’s Chief Infrastructure Officer Michael Mahon says the circuit will be very important for enhancing and securing the electricity supply across the region.
He says the underground circuit option also means that the area is likely to be unaffected by outages from storms in the future.
The company is also establishing a community benefit fund and forum to engage with local’s right through construction and into the operation phase of the project.
Michael Mahon the Chief Infrastructure Officer with Eirgrid told Midwest News that this power line will enhance the capacity of the grid in North Mayo.
