The Oireachtas Agriculture Committee should be recalled immediately for an urgent meeting to deal with the slump in processing forestry licences.

That's according to Roscommon-Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice, who says the committee was told several months ago that an average of 100 licences a week would be needed to meet the overall target for the year but in the last 8 weeks, only about 34 licences per week have been approved.

The Independent TD says the fall-off in productivity has gone on for long enough, and he's calling on chairman of the Agriculture Committee Jackie Cahill to reconvene an urgent meeting to address the backlog in licences.

Speaking with Midwest News, Deputy Fitzmaurice says this is crippling the entire forestry sector, and having a knock-on impact on other sectors, and he believes people within the Department should be held accountable.....
