The Mayo man who died after being struck by a car while taking part in a leisure cycle in Connemara on Sunday has been named locally as John O'Malley, a native of Carrowniskey, Louisburg who was living in Annaghdown in Galway.

Mr O'Malley, who was in his mid-50's, was participating in the Cunga Cycling Club's annual leisure sportif through Connemara when he was struck by a vehicle near Corr na Mona at about 1.45 on Sunday afternoon.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

John O'Malley was the son of James and Nora O'Malley and was married with two daughters.

His Funeral Mass will be held in St Brendan's Church, Annaghdown on Thursday at 12 noon with burial afterwards in Cregg Cemetery.

Gardai in Clifden are appealing for anyone who witnesses the collision to come forward.
