The cyclist who died in a road collision close to Corr na Mona in county Galway yesterday afternoon was taking part in a leisure cycle event.

The collision involving a car and a bicycle occurred on the R345 near Corr na Mona, at 1.30 yesterday afternoon.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not yet been released by gardai, however, Midwest News understands he was from county Mayo.

The Cunga Cycling Club, based in Cong, organised yesterday’s cycling event – the Cunga Ram leisure cycle.

On its Facebook page last night the club posted its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased rider and requested that their privacy be respected.

It added – “as with any serious incident or accident the club is now working with the Gardaí to establish precisely what happened on this occasion”.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the fatal collision and are appealing to any road users who may have camera footage and were travelling on the R345 near Corr Na Mona at about 1.30pm yesterday afternoon, to make this footage available to them.
