Castlebar native Mark Mellett is to retire as Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces in September.

Vice Admiral Mellett took up the top post in September 2015.

He first joined the Irish Naval Service in 1976 and worked his way up the ranks to the position of Chief of Staff.

The Minister for Defence Simon Coveney has confirmed today that Major General Séan Clancy has been appointed to succeed the current Chief of Staff when Vice Admiral Mellett retires on 29th September.

Minister Coveney has thanked Mark Mellett for his outstanding contribution as Chief of Staff over the last 6 years, and wished him well in his future endeavours.

The Minister said " the leadership, professionalism and dedication shown by him as brought great honour on the Defence Forces, and on this nation as a whole".
