Gardai are urging motorists to lock their vehicles when parking in coastal and scenic locations this Summer, as millions of euro worth of property are stolen from cars each year.
Over 36 million euro in valuables have been stolen from cars between 2016 and 2020.
Gardai say the average value of property stolen is about €660 - cash, car accessories, jewellery, electronics and tools are the items most often taken in these incidents.
People are urged to leave valuable items at home if not required, and to park in well-lit carparks where possible, double checking that doors and windows are locked before you leave the car.
60 percent of thefts from vehicles at locations associated with outdoor activities occur in the Summer months.
It's most likely to happen on weekends between 2pm and 7pm.
Despite thefts from cars dropping by 22 percent in 2020, Gardai are urging motorists to secure their vehicle when parking in unattended carparks in coastal and scenic locations.
