Raiders who broke into a business premises in Castlebar last night were interrupted by Gardai and got away empty-handed.

The intruders gained entry to McHale Agri, Forest & Garden on Sir Ernst Chain Road -the link road between Breaffy and Moneen - and removed chainsaws, hedge trimmers, strimmers, leaf blowers and other equipment to the value of about €20,000.

They had deactivated an alarm box on the outside of the building, but alarm sensors in the shop picked up their movement, and the alarm company contacted the owner Tom McHale.

Mr McHale told Midwest News that he immediately rang the Gardai, who were nearby.

When Gardai arrived, the intruders were moving the stolen goods to a van parked nearby and they escaped the scene empty-handed.

Tom McHale has thanked the Gardai and Right Price Alarms for their quick response, and is looking forward to having the stolen goods returned.

He's advising business owners to ensure they have an alarm system installed, which is monitored around the clock.

A Garda investigation to the incident is underway.
