The driving test system is in complete chaos, and urgent action is needed to tackle the backlog for both the driving and theory tests.
That's according to Roscommon / Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice, who says young people feel abandoned by the current system.
There are now about 120,000 learner drivers waiting to sit the theory test, and over 70,000 people waiting for a full driving test.
After the lifting of level 5 Covid restrictions, the Road Safety Authority planned to double the number of theory tests being held every month to 50,000 but the Government has not yet given the go-ahead for this, says Deputy Fitzmaurice.
The Independent TD says some people have been left in limbo for over a year, and the delay is impacting particularly on young people who need a licence to get a Summer job.
Deputy Fitzmaurice told Midwest News that we do not appear to be making progress in tackling the backlog.
