An Bord Pleanala has granted planning permission, with conditions, for a new Lidl store in Claremorris - overturning an earlier decision by Mayo County Council to refuse permission for the development.
Last Summer, the local authority had refused permission to Lidl Ireland to construct a single storey discount foodstore with off-licence and associated car-parking, on a site at Kilcolman Road on the outskirts of Claremorris.
Among their concerns was the location of the site.
The council's decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanala, whose own inspector also recommended refusal.
However, the board voted by a majority of 5 votes to 3 to grant planning permission, subject to 15 conditions.
In deciding not to accept the Inspector's recommendation, the Board said it was satisfied that the proposed development would comply with national and local retail policy which favours town centres as the location for new retail development.
Lidl Ireland says the new store in Claremorris will provide up to 25 fulltime jobs, in addition to 40-50 jobs during the construction phase.
