A Galway Councillor is calling for designated public spaces for outdoor drinking to be piloted this summer.
Fianna Fail Councillor Alan Cheevers argues that a lot of public drinking is currently happening in green spaces and is taking away from city landscapes.
The Galway City East representative would like to see a pilot scheme for outdoor drinking in public spaces modelled off those in Ohio and Vancouver.
His calls follow further public disorder over the weekend, which saw 55 people arrested for public order offences in Dublin and Cork.
Councillor Alan Cheevers told Midwest News that the students unions in Galway are backing the proposal.
