There’s all sorts of restrictions and barriers being put in the way of anyone building a one-off house in Erris. That’s the strong view of Erris based councillor Gerry Coyle.
At this week’s Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting, councillors were informed that 12 houses to an acre of land in Westport was a reasonable density, however, cllr Coyle made the point that a person with 60 acres in Erris failed to get planning permission to build a single house in the locality recently.
Cllr Coyle insists that it is getting tougher to secure planning for a house in rural areas like Erris and he wants a halt called to what he sees as the excessive planning restrictions being put on people and their housing needs, in stark contrast to the protections in place for flora, fauna and the birds.
