43 per cent of all Covid-19 deaths in Ireland have been associated with nursing home outbreaks.

According to freedom of information figures, there have been nearly 600 individual outbreaks in these settings.

On February 14th, there had been just under 4,000 Covid deaths in the Republic.

New figures show 1,708 were linked to outbreaks in nursing homes.

In the period of almost a year to that date, 382 nursing homes had experienced outbreaks.

As some facilities had more than one cluster, there were a total of 566 outbreaks in these settings at that point.

They involved 14,147 cases - which was 7 per cent of the country's total.

41 per cent of the cases linked to nursing home outbreaks were in the east of the country.
