More efforts need to be made to involve parents and guardians in the discharge process of patients from the Mayo Health and Psychiatric Unit.
That’s the view of Ballina-based councillor John O’Hara.
The Fine Gael representative is a member of the HSE West Regional Health Forum and has sought clarity on the discharge process and follow up procedures for patients suffering with a mental illness.
In response, the Chief Officer of the Community Healthcare West Breda Crehan-Roche outlined the Mayo Mental Health Service’s discharge policy, stating that ‘every effort is made to involve next of kin in the assessment and treatment plan.’
Cllr John O’Hara told Midwest News that next of kin should be contacted before patients are released from the facility.
