Connemara based firm ÉireComposites, has announced an agreement with a Belgian company to design and produce equipment that will form part of the European Space Agency’s ALTIUS satellite.
Stray light baffles will be the first external and largest functioning piece of equipment to be made in Ireland and launched into space.
ÉireComposites, established since 1998, will manufacture the three stray light baffles that will be attached to the side of the satellite’s optical instruments and will prevent stray light from reaching the lenses of the satellite’s optical instruments.
Belgian firm OIP forms part of a consortium that secured the contract with the European Space Agency to build this satellite that is expected to be launched by the end of 2023.
The ALTIUS mission will provide enhance understanding on how the rise in greenhouse gases will affect the atmosphere.
