The Mayor of Galway says it is alarming that the city centre has the highest rate of Covid-19 infection nationwide.
Mike Cubbard is based in the Local Electoral Area and he says it was inevitable that there was going to be outbreaks when students returned for second semester.
Earlier this week, the HSE reported 135 cases among students in the area, stemming from 15 clusters ranging from two to forty people.
Cllr Cubbard says that the area in question also has a number of frontline workers stationed in hospitals and nursing home settings across the electoral area, contributing to the rise in case numbers.
Mike Cubbard told Midwest News that students and the wider community must once again redouble efforts to suppress the virus.
