The son of a Ballyhaunis woman has died following an avalanche at a ski resort in the Swiss Alps.
29-year old Matt Barnaville died after the avalanche at a resort near Nendaz in the Valais region of Switzerland on Monday.
Matt, who was born and raised in England, lived in Switzerland and worked as a ski instructor at the resort.
His mother is Mary Imelda Waldron, a native of Cave, Ballyhaunis who lives now in St Lucia.
It's understood Mr Barnaville was one of three skiers who left the marked slope at about 12.20 on Monday, and was subsequently swept away.
Emergency services flew him by helicopter to hospital, but he died from his injuries.
He's one of seven people who have died as a result of avalanches in recent days on the Swiss Alps.
A relative has told Midwest News that Matt was a regular visitor to Ballyhaunis almost every Summer.
He's survived by his parents, sister Keeva and extended family, including a number of uncles, aunts and cousins in the Ballyhaunis area.
