The bins are for the birds, at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar at present and need to be made “bird proof”, according to local councillor Ger Deere.
The Fine Gael councillor who is also an active member of Castlebar Tidy Towns says he is often contacted by people using the lovely Lough Lannagh walk and greenway, complaining that people are throwing rubbish in the area and describing it as unsightly.
However, cllr Deere told the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District that while some people may litter in the area, on further investigation Tidy Towns has discovered that many people dispose of their rubbish appropriately in the bins, but then the birds attack the bins and scatter the litter around them.
He called for the bins to be made “bird proof” to address the problem.
Councillor Deere told Midwest News about the need to resolve the litter issue around Lough Lannagh.
