Drug crime detections have increased significantly in Mayo this year.
Sale and supply cases have increased by 160% with 78 detections in 2020. There were 222 drug possession arrests this year (up by 100%).
These figures were outlined today at a meeting of the Mayo Joint Policing Committee.
To date, drugs valued at just under €1.4 million have been seized by Gardaí in Mayo.
There were 16 busts of cultivation operations in the county so far this year, compared to four during the same period in 2019. Cultivation offences have rocketed by 300%.
Westport based Independent Councillor Christy Hyland has described these new figures as frightening but says it reinforces the need for additional resource to tackle the problem.
