The 50 strong volunteers with Ballina Lions Club were the delighted winners of a National Pride of Place Award at the weekend.

While the many groups and volunteers that work closely with Belcarra Community Project are equally thrilled with their success in the competition.

These two Mayo groups secured national titles in their categories  at the 2020 Pride of Place Awards on Saturday night, which were held online.

Belcarra Community Group won in category 2, representing populations of 300 to 1000.

Ballina Lions Club were successful in category 5, for populations over 5000.

Pride of Place honours communities across the island of Ireland for their work during the Covid-19 crisis, and are known as the "Oscars of the Community Sector".

The event was organised by Co-Operation Ireland, and local authorities across the country nominate groups in their communities who they feel have made a significant contribution, working collectively at improving their neighbourhood.

David Mullarkey the Chair of the project for Ballina Lions Club told Midwest News today that the club has been established in Ballina for many years and have organised and assisted in a variety of projects in the area over the past twelve months.

While Mary Fitzgerald, the Chair of the Belcarra Community Project, said they were all absolutely thrilled with the win on Saturday night and praised the local community and its input into all that is organised and available in the area.
