Patients will be moved from Ballina District Hospital temporarily so that staff can be redeployed to a residential facility for the elderly in north Mayo currently experiencing a Covid-19 outbreak.

That’s according to Mayo Fianna Fail Deputy Dara Calleary, who was informed of the move by the HSE.

Patients on the male ward at Ballina District Hospital are set to be swabbed and moved to either Swinford or Belmullet District Hospitals.

The Mayo TD has criticised the move by the HSE, as he does not believe the burden of assisting the facility experiencing a Covid-19 outbreak should rest solely on Ballina District Hospital staff.

Deputy Calleary told Midwest News that there are other ways of assisting the facility currently experiencing a Covid outbreak.

Midwest News has contacted the HSE for comment on the matter and we are awaiting a response.
