The Department of Transport must not turn its back on Ireland West Airport Knock during this time of unprecedented turmoil in the aviation industry.
That was the plea made by Mayo Fianna Fail TD Dara Calleary in a Dáil debate last night.
Last week, Ryanair confirmed that it was cutting it's Winter schedule at the Mayo airport by 80%, with just 7 flights per week.
The airport will only operate 3 days per week for the Winter, with staff laid off or put on short-time, while the airport is facing losses in the region of €4 million this year.
While €21 million was set aside in last week's Budget for regional airports in 2021, Deputy Calleary says an urgent cash injection is needed now at Knock Airport for this year
