Recruitment is underway for additional staff at Swinford District Hospital, which will result in the opening of up to 16 beds now closed at the facility.

That has been confirmed today by Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Dara Calleary.

Speaking to Midwest News today the deputy has welcomed the  investment in community care district hospitals across County Mayo, but says further investment is required to alleviate pressure on Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.  

The recent Winter Health Plan and the Budget highlighted the importance of district hospitals, he says, and they have an important role to play as we learn to live with Covid-19.  

Belmullet District Hospital is to have work done on the Sluice Room, an upgrade of the shower facilities, in addition to an upgrade of the kitchen area in Aras Dheirbhle Community Nursing Unit which is to be carried out before the end of this year.

While minor improvement works are to be carried out at Ballina District Hospital.
