Mayo and Sligo are to be two of the four locations nationally for new Memory Assessment Units, for the early detection of alzheimers and dementia.
It follows yesterday’s Budget in which almost 13 million euro was announced for dementia services nationally.
Mayo Fianna Fail Senator Lisa Chambers told Midwest News this lunchtime that at present there is only one location nationally, St James Hospital in Dublin that has such a facility.
The spread of the new Memory Units across the regions, will enable the earlier detection of dementia and Semator Chambers said that’s vital in treating the disease.
The exact location of the units have not yet been finalised within each county, but it’s expected they will be operational by 2022.
