Medical cards will be made available to more people over the age of 70, from next month.

The measure was announced in the last Budget, but had not yet come into effect.

Today, the Health Minister Stephen Donnelly announced he has secured funding for a range of measures - including the increases in the over-70's medical card income limits, as well as a reduction in the Drugs Payment Scheme threshold by €10 to €114 per month, and a 50 cent reduction in prescription charges for all medical card holders.

The funding will ensure that the over-70's medical card income limits will be increased to €550 per week for a single person and to €1,050 for a couple.

It's expected these measures will take effect from the 1st November.
