An outboard engine and a GPS device was stolen from a rescue boat in Cong within the past 24 to 48 hours.

The theft occurred in an area adjacent to Lough Corrib and has resulted in the Corrib Mask search and rescue losing a vessel.

One of their crew went by this morning and noticed the Yamaha outboard engine was stolen along with a Lowrance GPS system, the equipment is valued at €10,000.

Claremorris Gardai are currently investigating the incident.

Vincent Heneghan, the chairman of Corrib Mask search and rescue says they are devastated as the engine is used on their search and rescue missions and as a result of the theft they are off board.
