Gardaí are investigating a road traffic collision involving a number of cyclists during a road race near Castlebar this morning.

Fifteen cyclists were involved in the crash on the Castlebar to Pontoon road at approximately 10 o'clock.

Midwest News understands that the front wheel of one cyclist collided with the rear wheel of a second cyclist, resulting in a pile-up.

A number of cyclists were taken to Mayo University Hospital for treatment, however none of their injuries were life threatening.

Emergency Services attended the scene and the road was closed between Pontoon and Castlebar until around 1pm.

The National Road Race Championships are taking place today in the region which has seen an increased volume of cyclists on the road.

Gardaí say investigations into the collision are ongoing.
