The Tohermore Residential Unit must be reassigned for new use by the HSE to avoid it becoming idle and derelict.
That’s according to Tuam-based Fianna Fail Counillor Donagh Killilea, who raised the issue of its future use at a meeting with the HSE West Forum.
The facilities last remaining eleven residents were relocated into community living settings around Castlerea and Tuam in February.
Cllr Killilea argues that leaving the building idle would be a huge waste of the E1.6m invested in the facility in recent years.
He told Midwest News that Galway County Council have expressed interest in developing a retirement housing setting at the site.
